National Healthcare Design Award for the Best New Development in Specialist Healthcare 2007

New Developments at Whickham Villa

2006/07 has seen the completion of the exciting development of Whickham Villa's Healthclub, the development of 2 semi-independent living apartments on site and 8 new bedrooms in Chase Park.

Phase 1 also includes the provision of a further 8 single en-suite bedrooms to the Young Adult Rehabilitation/Nursing Unit. Click here for a diagrammatic representation of Phase 1.

2007/08 will see Phase 2 of our service and facility expansion. Phase 2 includes the commissioning of two off site satellite facilities. Both buildings will be located approximately within 1 mile of the main site so that easy access to the new ‘Health Club’ and other on site services can be easily maintained.

The ‘Community Rehabilitation Facility’ will be a highly adapted bungalow able to cater for clients with the most complex physical needs. This more independent flexible facility will offer clients a stepping-stone towards independent living as part of their rehabilitation pathway. This will also provide the opportunity for families/carers to share a living environment and gain the appropriate skills and experience that may be required to provide a seamless transition towards independent living.

Continuity of service for clients will be provided from our existing therapy team within the Community Rehabilitation Facility and within the clients identified future independent living environment as required.

The Community Rehabilitation Facility will also be made available to non-resident service users in order to provide a full Multi Disciplinary Team Assessment. This may be particularly important for individuals who have difficulties accessing local community therapy services. The therapy team in partnership with the individually staffed Community Rehabilitation Facility will deliver a full MDT assessment for clients within an independent living environment.

Assessment will be completed with the goal of enabling clients to return to home living with a refreshed holistic life plan. The clients existing care team, with training and support provided as required, can implement this individual holistic life plan seeking to maximise client independence and choice. These plans can be reviewed on an individual basis.

Referrals to the Community Rehabilitation Facility, following appropriate professional consultation and assessment, can be made for clients within the main rehabilitation unit or directly from the acute and community services.

The ‘Small Group Independent Living Property’ will be an adapted property able to cater for four clients with low-medium physical needs. This independent supported living facility can offer clients a stepping-stone towards independent living as part of their rehabilitation pathway. The property can also offer individual clients an independent supported living environment for life with appropriate individual levels of support.

Continuity of service for clients will be provided from our existing therapy team within the Small Group Independent Living Property and within any identified future independent living environment as required. Furthermore, easy access to the ‘Health Club’ and other social opportunities provided by the main unit will be readily available to clients.

As part of their rehabilitation pathway and to promote independence, clients using this facility will be offered with the opportunity of taking out a tenancy agreement and appropriate controls regarding their financial independence. Clients and/or Case Managers can develop flexible needs appropriate community support packages on an individual basis within the unit.

Referrals to the Small Group Independent Living Property, following appropriate professional consultation and assessment, can be made for clients within the main rehabilitation unit, the community rehabilitation facility or directly from acute and community services.
